IJ Clinic on Entrepreneurship

Students

IJ Clinic Director Beth Milnikel, left, and IJ Clinic client Alex Morales, of Smartmouth Design meet in his woodworking shop with IJ Clinic law students Simon Rasin and Shawna Doran.

What Can I Learn in the IJ Clinic?

The IJ Clinic is the Law School's first and only practical training ground for law students who are interested in transactional work generally and entrepreneurship specifically. The IJ Clinic involves students in every phase of client representation. Students interview applicants and help decide which clients to accept and engage, travel into the city's neighborhoods to visit the clients' businesses, research regulatory issues, prepare filings, draft and review contracts, counsel clients on the protection of intellectual property and, most importantly, assist entrepreneurs to turn their dreams into reality.

Who is Eligible?

A lottery is held in the spring of students' first year to determine participation in the Law School's clinical programs.  IJ Clinic students are required to take Entrepreneurship and The Law, a two-credit seminar.
During the summer before second year, the clinic will invite the first set of students off the lottery list.  They must take the prerequisite (Entrepreneurship and the Law) before enrolling in the Clinic.  As additional slots open, students will be invited in the order of the lottery list, with priority given to students who have already taken the prerequisite.

Can I Get Credit for My Work in the IJ Clinic?

The Law School grants students one credit for every term in which they work 45 hours, with a maximum of three credits per term and a maximum of six credits during their stay at the Law School.

How Can I Learn More?

Feel free to stop by the IJ Clinic, which is in the southeast corner of the first floor of the Arthur Kane Center (K108-K111), call us at (773) 834-3129 or email Elizabeth Milnikel.

Student Testimonials:

I just wanted to say that it was a great pleasure working with both of you over the last two years.  I greatly appreciate all the advice and training you both provided me.  I have no doubt it will be invaluable in my future practice.
-Tarek, Class of 2009

I feel privileged to have helped [a client] realize her dream through the IJ Clinic. As her business grows , I know her limitless energy, tenacity and optimism will inspire the next class of law students to be as passionate about entrepreneurship as she has made me.
-Angela, Class of 2005
